An Intro to Bilingualism:
A Short Course for the SLP

This two-day primer is designed for a range of professionals who work with bilingual, 2nd language learners, & non-English speakers who present with communication disorders. A substantial amount of time will be spent on defining bilingualism; reviewing the developmental sequences of bilingualism; recognizing factors such as affect & cognitive, etc. that impact on second language learning (& bilingualism); identifying linguistic variables that impact on 2nd language learning; discussing the unique skills of bilingual speakers (including translation abilities, code-switching & reading in more than one script) along with reviewing the processes of typical & atypical (aphasia) language loss in bilingual speakers. In addition, time will be spent on evaluating & treating these groups of speakers in the speech/language pathology clinic.
